Golden Plains Wind Farm East, Regional Victoria

BACKGROUND

The Golden Plains Wind Farm East is located in a small rural town in the Golden Plains Shire; approximately 60 km north-west of Geelong. The windfarm comprises 122 turbines and is a state significant project that will be Australia’s largest wind farm to date and power more than 765,000 homes. This $3 billion plus project is a landmark clean energy project for Victoria and Australia. BMS Heavy Cranes Australia required support cranes to feed their large 750t All-Terrain Cranes on site.

OUTCOMES

BMS’ scope includes offloading turbine components, up-ending towers and assembly of tower stands and blade assembly. They needed a versatile, mobile, easy set up crane that has a huge lifting capacity. Empire Cranes presented the Liebherr LTR1220, with a maximum load capacity 220t, a telescopic boom of 60m, maximum hoist height of 101m and maximum operating radius of 88m the LTR1220 was the obvious choice. The crawler travel gear provides outstanding off-the-road handling as well as maneuverability with excellent handling.
